The Cage of Self-Absorption

By SharonBody Image, Self-esteem, Worship3 Comments

The longer I am a Christian the more I am convinced I spend too much time thinking about myself. Each day, how much time do I give to thinking about…

Hey y’all, just hopping on here to tell you some Hey y’all, just hopping on here to tell you something about myself that, if you follow me for any period of time, you need to understand:

I believe the Bible. Like, I *for real* believe it. I take this VERY seriously, which is why I want to be clear. We live in a tremendously polarized culture, in which people just assume you are pushing some secret agenda (especially when what you have written implicates them) and it is important for you to know my agenda is this and this alone: being faithful to Scripture, and proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ.

If I post something, and you are wondering if there is a secret partisan agenda behind it? Nope. The parties can burn to the ground for all I care (and they will). I just believe the Bible.

Wondering if I’m secretly liberal? Nope. I just believe the Bible.

Wondering if I’m secretly conservative? Nope. I just believe the Bible.

Feeling like I’m singling out one issue? Nope. I just believe the Bible (and I’ll get to the other side, don’t worry!)

I need you to know how deeply I trust Scripture and submit myself to the WHOLE of it. Everything I teach is guided by that higher compass, so if you ever wonder if I am hiding some other agenda, I am not. Please, never mistake this.

Over the years of doing ministry—and also just b Over the years of doing ministry—and also just being a person in the world—one of the marital dynamics that has made me so sad is encountering couples that clearly settled, or married unwisely. Their marriage might not be straight up bad, but their spouse is constantly derailing them, or standing between them and God’s call on their life. Rather than running together, one is dragging the other along. Or, holding them back.

Some of this is impossible to predict. Life shapes us and changes us in ways we could never anticipate. Also, some seasons of marriage are harder than others. In some seasons, one spouse is stronger, and in other seasons the reverse. This is the sanctification that comes from living out our vows.

But in as much as we can be wise, these are a few things to consider if you are dating someone. There are of course others—do not marry anyone who abuses you, belittles you, or manipulates you!— but these are the less obvious red flags that couples tend to overlook. And I want better for you. 💛

Striving, keeping up, puffing yourself up, always needing bigger and more, it is all death. Truly. Anyone preaching a gospel other than this is selling you something.

This is hard but important. Good Friday makes a mo This is hard but important. Good Friday makes a mockery of our self-help gospels. It also refuses us the self-assurance of “I could never,” “he could never,” and “we could never.” Because we could. And we did. Good Friday will not let us deny it.

But this is, strangely, part of the Good News. Which is to say, you don’t have to be good enough. Whenever your darkest hour comes, it was never darker than this. If this terrible day could not separate us from the love of God, then nothing can. #GoodFriday
